Back to School with Confidence: Tips from the Team at CTS

The start of a new school year brings excitement, change, and sometimes a little bit of stress — for both kids and caregivers.

At Creative Therapy Solution, we know transitions can be challenging, especially for children who thrive on routine and predictability. That’s why we’re here to offer a few tips to help your family ease into the back-to-school season with confidence and calm.

  1. Start Routines Early

Ease into your school-year routines a couple of weeks before the first day. Shift bedtime and wake-up times gradually, reintroduce lunchbox packing, and even do a few dry runs of the morning routine. The more familiar things feel, the smoother the transition.

  1. Create a Visual Schedule

Many children benefit from visual supports. A simple daily schedule with pictures or icons can help kids understand what’s coming next and give them a sense of control over their day. This can include morning routines, school hours, therapy sessions, and after-school activities.

  1. Prepare for the Environment

Whether your child is returning to the same school or starting a new one, visiting the school ahead of time can help them feel more comfortable. Walk the hallways, show them their classroom, and meet the teacher if possible. You can even take pictures to create a social story about what to expect.

  1. Regulate Together

Big feelings are normal this time of year. Help your child learn to identify their emotions and practice regulation tools at home — breathing exercises, movement breaks, fidget items, or quiet corners can make a big difference.

  1. Collaborate with Educators

Open lines of communication with your child’s teachers and school team. Share strategies that work at home and ask for the same in return. If your child receives services through CTS, we’re happy to support collaboration with the school as part of our coordination of care.

  1. Celebrate the Wins

Every small success matters — whether it’s putting on a backpack, saying goodbye at drop-off, or sitting through circle time. Celebrate those moments and encourage progress over perfection.

  1. Ask for Help

Transitions can highlight areas where extra support may be needed. If you’re noticing new behaviors or concerns, reach out. Whether it’s parent guidance, direct ABA therapy, or just a check-in, the CTS team is here to walk alongside you.
